Cupid’s Tea

And thus two wonderful Victorian traditions meet: valentines and tea.

In the 19th century, the making and giving of valentines was no casual, last-minute affair. Greetings exchanged on “Love’s Own Day” were carefully crafted by hand for every member of the family (in addition to that special someone…) Children spent many an industrious hour crowded around the kitchen table, crafting heartfelt greetings from colorful scraps of paper, doilies, ribbons, and strips of fabric. A hot cup of tea and a heart-shaped cake were but a natural accompaniment to such festivities.

There is time yet to host a Cupid’s Tea of your own…
